Dad’s Dance

A VERY SPECIAL time of the year, Dad’s Dance.

Fridays, two timeslots:  5:30-7 pm or  7 pm-8:30 pm.  Location: Wildflower Gym. Exact Dates TBA, likely Feb 27th or March 6th start date til Showcase, five or six rehearsals.

Dads registered for the 5:30 timeslot will perform in the Friday 24th 7 pm show and the Saturday 26th 2 pm Matinee.

Dads registered for the 7 pm slot will perform Saturday, 25th 7 pm show and Sunday 26th 2pm Matinee.  Space pending dads can do both timeslots, for the keeners.

If you are new to the studio, a quick explanation: This has become an annual highlight of our April Showcase. The dads learn a dance with their children to close the show, it is very very misty, sweet, fun and EPIC! The kids have been over age 9 in the past as it requires a good deal of focus in a crowded room, and mainly the choreography is suited to older kids and teens.
This class is a chance to bond, laugh, and have fun and learn some groovy moves. Open to dads ( stepdads, or dad like figures) and their kids. The crowd loves it (still have folks talking about it), the kids are so proud of their dads (stepdads or dad like figures), and new friendships are formed through this rite of passage. Excellent chance to bond in a new way! PS. you do NOT need dance experience!

Registration for this will be done at the end of January. Dads need to register with their OWN account, not their dancers 🙂

Costume: TBA

Fun: To be had.

From last year’s participants:

“I coach a lot of her sports but dad dance was the best connection I had with Lilly last year. My daughter was stoked to be able to show me her dance world and it was cool to be able to switch roles with me as the student and her as the coach. Thanks for giving us that.”  – Simon Liddell ( LVR High school teacher)

“Dad’s Dance was one of the coolest, scariest, endearing things I’ve ever done. It was an experience both me and my two stepdaughters will never forget. It brought us closer, made us laugh, and created a story we’ll recall and share for many years to come.” – Mitchell Scott (editor-in-chief of Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine)

Jazz Open Level 13yrs+

NEW DAY!

Jazz dance paralleled the birth and spread of jazz itself from its roots in Black American culture and was popularized in ballrooms by the big bands of the swing era (1930s and 40s). It radically altered the style of American and European stage and social dance in the 20th century. The term is sometimes used to describe popular stage dance and jazz-derived or jazz-influenced modern dance forms.

Hilary will share her extensive training to hone the dancers’ alignment, extensions, and musicality. Classes will focus on strength, balancing, flexibility, and rhythm. Students will learn kicks, turns, and jumps with proper technique. Develop flexibility and strength alongside solid dance technique with across-the-floor skills and fun combos.

This class is geared for dancers of all levels, and moves will be layered sequentially to ensure proper technique.

House Open Level 13yrs+

This class will be in the recital.

House Dance is a style of dance that originated in the late 70’s and early 80’s from underground clubs in Chicago and New York. It reflects and comes from club music known as House, which evolved out of the disco era.  House dance emphasizes fast and complex footwork combined with fluid movements in the torso.  The style was influenced by several types of movement, including Tap, African dance, Latin dance, and martial arts.

This style is about freedom, improvisation, feeling the music, and sharing with others. Prepare to move your feet and whole being and work your brain-body connection.

This class will cover the foundation and be open to various levels, so there will be more basic coordination covered, and more complexity will also be layered on weekly to give students with experience a lot to embody and train with

House involves lots of footwork and weight transfer and will get you sweaty in no time.

We have two levels for House, see below for the difference.

House Open Level – Tuesday 7:30pm  –  If you love good beats, love to move your feet and whole being, and are ready to sweat and get down, this is for YOU! This class will cover foundation and will be open to a variety of levels, so there will be more basic coordinations and more complexity will be layered on as well.  Just know that House involves lots of footwork and weight transfer. Cardio! This choreo session is appropriate for dancers with some prior dance experience, not a total beginner class.

House Intermediate – Wednesday 7pm  – This class will build on the foundation, adding more complexity and speed to choreography. It is appropriate for dancers with dance experience, we will be doing faster-paced weight transitions and choreo, more complexity in each routine.
